All about the SLAM Engine

We’re starting a revolution
Walking up and down buildings for hours to take recordings never really was our thing. And I bet it isn’t yours either. Walking. Taking a Fingerprint. Waiting for 15 seconds. Walking…This can get really tiresome, especially when you have to map a giant building of, let’s say, 30,000sqm. We, for our part, have had enough of this and decided to spend our time more wisely. For instance with developing a solution to help speed up the implementation process of an Indoor Navigation system. That’s when the idea for our SLAM Engine™, the first of three stages of our SLAM revolution, was born.
Project SLAM Engine
All well and good, but what does it actually do? The SLAM Engine™ is an innovative technology, which helps increase efficiency of the installation of your Indoor Navigation system. By speeding up the process of mapping a building 10-fold, compared to manual fingerprinting of the building, it is a major time-saver. The SLAM Engine™ provides for best usability, as manual input is reduced to a minimum. These benefits also result in cost efficiency.
The benefits in a nutshell:
- Time efficient
- Cost efficient
- Usability
As you can see above, the left image shows a building map with recordings taken by Fingerprinting. On the right side, there’s a map which uses SLAM Engine™ recordings. The colour code represents accuracy and the scale ranges from red (very bad accuracy) to blue (very good accuracy). If you compare these two maps, you will instantly see that accuracy is far better on the map recorded with SLAM.
Working its magic
So how does it work? As mentioned above, the SLAM Engine™ provides a great level of automation. Only minimal input is required from your side, the rest is being taken care of by the smart algorithms of the Engine. You walk trough the building with your phone at a regular pace and take ground truths whenever you’re changing directions. In doing so, the map is generated automatically from the radio data. Like this, a building of 10,000sqm can be mapped within only 1 working day! Here is a quich guide of how to take recordings with the SLAM Engine™.
The SLAM Engine™ has been used in successful projects around the globe. Here are some examples:
Remember this is just phase one in the indoo.rs SLAM revolution, the next is SLAM Crowd Engine™ and this will take the maintenance to another level! Follow the whole SLAM revolution on our Blog
